Who is a deacon and what do they do?

The word “deacon” comes to us from the Greek word “diakonos”, meaning “an attendant or servant, a waiter”.  Interestingly, the very first deacons were appointed by the church to do just that, to serve tables (Acts 6: 1-7).  Their role was to run errands and perform other menial duties in the work of the Church, so that the Elders could devote themselves to study, prayer, and teaching the Word.

Historically, the most visible function of the deacons in our congregation has been to facilitate worship by assisting in greeting and ushering, serving the elements of communion, etc...  Deacons also serve with the elders in sharing communion with our shut-ins on Sunday mornings.  Other duties include assisting with baptisms, the care of the facilities and vehicles, setting up and taking down chairs and tables, and similar physical activities. The deacons also have a spiritual role in the life of the church.  They are active worshipers and learners.  Some are teachers and Bible study leaders. Jesus Himself said, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last and the “deacon of all”. (Mark 9:35).
